Go wild with science! Whale & Dolphin calls – what, how and how many ?
The oceans are filled with symphonies. Marine animals, especially dolphins and whales, use sounds to feed, communicate and understand the environment around them. Scientists record these sounds and learn to tell these species apart. Come and find out how we record those sounds and calls and how we can use them to count whales and dolphins at sea.
On 6th of April, the ACCURATE project along with SMRU and CREEM participate in an outreach even at the Botanic Gardens of St Andrews. We talked about whale and dolphin vocalizations, how they are produced, how we record them (for example using acoustic tags) and study them (i.e. using passive acoustic software to visualize the sounds) and finally, how we can count how many animals there are by recording their vocalizations.
